Benefit package > TC

Just started as a first year BD analyst at a large firm (think:BR,Vanguard,Fidelity) in a sales position. My salary is competitive in Boston and is more than most people but still not GS NYC level pay.

However my buddies at those firms making $100k+ first year are getting into the office at 6am and leaving when the sun is down, on call at all times and barley have time off.

For what ends up being around $750 less a paycheck we live in the same quality apartments afford the same lifestyle but with unlimited paid time off, mind, body, and money benefits, three bonuses a year, easier tracks to Associates & VP in the same time frame as IB and best of all a 8:30-5 schedule.

I say this to say to people interested in finance but who are not stuck on getting into IB to really weigh the options at other firms including things besides your base salary when looking at offers.

I said the point of the post at the bottom, upcoming graduates or even kids still in school are getting intimidated by the IB stories and for a lot of people with less industry knowledge they seem to think summering in London then coming straight into IB in NYC is the only way to have the work/life/bank account balance at 30 when it really isn't. Nothing but love to the IB guys and gals though but just giving examples of other options for someone with the same financial goals who doesn't want to be sweating out an excel sheet at 2am for it to potentially not ever get seen.
