There isn't one type of hedge fund. These videos give a good overview of the market.

If you want to be in a credit/distressed/special situation fund, being in a high yield/distressed analyst is the best way in.

If you want to be at a quant fund - you probably want to be in an exotics group trading some quant strategy.

If you want to be at a macro fund- you want to be a rates or FX trader.

If you want to be at a long short equity fund - you probably want to be at a sec lending desk knowing where you can find some GME shares to cover your short
