Breaking into an Activist Hedge Fund in London

I've being working at a family office (AUM c.$2bn) for 4 years that typically makes VC / growth equity investments varying from $1m-$20m. This year we ran an activism campaign and I enjoyed the work far more than the previous growth equity investments we had made. I'd be interested to know whether anyone has made the jump into Activist Hedge Funds from a non-typical background (e.g not from IB)? What tips would you give for someone wanting to make the jump?
