Breaking into HF from VP IBD
Hey all,
I've been thinking about my career and am wondering if anyone has been able to successfully make a jump from the VP level within investment banking to the hedge fund world - would love to get some tips if so or if you've seen it happen 1st or 2nd hand. I'm thinking the most applicable roles would be fundamental long only, long/short, and event driven / merger arb at single manager / multi manager platforms, but not super familiar.
Some headhunters have been somewhat receptive in the first conversations to platforms that might consider non-traditional candidates. Are there any tips or advice (including which headhunters would be the most useful or those to avoid?)?
Thanks in advance. I know it's a long putt.
Why would you leave a cushy IBD VP position to work more, have more instability, lower pay (except outliers), and less exit opps at a HF? Makes no sense
I work at a bank that just failed (Credit Suisse / SVB Securities)
Im a first year VB at a BB (ignore username)
I recently have had some interviews for merger arb positions for discretionary trading teams at another BB, but just didnt get it accomplished. I also had one small HF interview for an alumni that started a tiny shop. He seemed receptive but ultimately told me he wanted somone younger who could grind more and be paid less (and didnt want to disrespect me )
There's opportunities. Keep looking as much as you can.
damn lol
Highly unlikely he will work more at a HF than IB.
