Is there a way you can make it in person? Happen to be in the same city the day of the call? It’s much easier to make things happen when you’re in person.

I think if you impress enough in the coffee (good takes, high energy/enthusiasm) then you could get them to intro you to someone else on the team who’d be more open to saying yes, or get an intro to another fund.

I think your #1 objective should be to deliver the message that you can add value to the team beyond actually pitching investments themselves. This may sound counterintuitive since the job is picking investments, but unless you’re already quite good, none of your existing ideas are fleshed out enough to be viable (although they could be if you get in the building and learn check the boxes that they need). By deliver value outside of the investments, I would focus on demonstrating that you are very capable with AI tools and can automate tedious processes that distract them from the time spent on real analysis. You can get to the bottom of this by asking “what do you feel like could be optimized in the investment process? If your team was much larger what else do you think you could accomplish?” If you can add value to them outside of making them feel smart by asking your rudimentary questions about valuation (which I still do encourage you to do) then you’ll be at the top of their list.
