Citadel Equities Investment Associate?

This is regarding Ashler, Global Equities, and Surveyor.

I'm guessing this is a post that is likely perpetually up given the turnover at Citadel and that hedge fund recruiting generally seems more unstructured. Would be greatly interested in hearing more about the interview process for someone with 1-2 YoE (I am currently a second year analyst). Unfortunately do not have deal experience due to unlucky circumstances, but hoping this doesn't strike against me and that the process will in that sense be more "meritocratic" and based on aptitude and skill. I have largely been preparing thus far for lateral IB positions and PE (have been grinding on LBOs, which is presumably useless for Citadel). Would be greatly appreciative if anybody can guide me towards some helpful resources for Citadel and general HF interview prep

For someone targeting Citadel's Equities Investment Associate roles (Ashler, Global Equities, Surveyor), here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Interview Process Overview

  • Structure: The process typically involves multiple rounds, including:

    • Behavioral Interviews: Focus on your background, strengths, weaknesses, and investment philosophy.
    • Technical Interviews: Expect to be drilled on financial modeling, valuation, and market knowledge. While LBO modeling may not be directly relevant, a strong grasp of equity valuation, public markets, and investment theses is critical.
    • Case Studies: You may be asked to analyze a company or investment idea within a set timeframe (2-3 hours) and present your recommendations.
    • Team Fit: A final round may involve informal discussions or even a dinner with the team to assess cultural fit.
  • Meritocracy: Citadel is known for its focus on aptitude and skill. While deal experience is valuable, demonstrating strong analytical abilities, market knowledge, and a clear investment thought process can compensate for a lack of direct deal experience.

2. Key Preparation Areas

  • Equity Valuation: Brush up on DCF, comparable company analysis, and precedent transactions. Be ready to discuss how you would value a public company.
  • Market Knowledge: Stay updated on current market trends, sectors, and macroeconomic factors. Be prepared to discuss recent trades or investment ideas.
  • Investment Thesis: Practice crafting and presenting concise, well-reasoned investment ideas. This is often a key part of the interview process.
  • Technical Skills: While LBO models may not be directly relevant, ensure you're comfortable with Excel and financial modeling basics. Citadel values efficiency and precision in technical work.

3. Resources for Preparation

  • WSO Hedge Fund Interview Prep Course: This course includes 814 questions across 165 hedge funds and is tailored for buyside roles. It covers everything from technical questions to case studies.
  • Mock Interviews: Consider scheduling mock interviews with professionals to simulate the high-pressure environment of Citadel's process.
  • Stock Pitch Templates: Use these to structure and refine your investment ideas.
  • Networking: Reach out to current or former Citadel employees for insights into the process and culture. WSO forums are a great place to start.

4. Additional Tips

  • Highlight Transferable Skills: Even without deal experience, emphasize skills like financial analysis, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
  • Be Technically Strong: Citadel values candidates who are technically proficient and can think critically under pressure.
  • Show Passion for Investing: Demonstrate genuine interest in public markets and a strong understanding of the hedge fund space.

If you're serious about this opportunity, focus on honing your equity research and valuation skills, and leverage resources like the WSO Hedge Fund Interview Prep Course to maximize your chances. Good luck!
