So what is the deal with these roles? It is somehow aligned to the investment/research group but it sounds very back office (e.g., develop tools to capture fundamental equity data) and works closely with the COO group and IT group.

It’s back office. You develop the data models and outputs while the investing team runs the financial models, thesis, and deck that uses your data analysis
