Class of 2018 but still associate?

I’m currently an associate at a fund, and I’ve been in the industry since graduating from UG in 2018 in a few sellsife/ buyside roles. My firm promised me I’ll be promoted this year but it didn’t happen, so I’m now looking at external options. Does the fact that I’m class of 2018 with 8 years of experience but still an associate impact recruiting opportunities for me? I think it’s just luck as I changed roles 2-3 times.

I think a lot of ppl will say that titles matter less in this industry as you know... either you are a PM or you're not. But when you say you're an associate is it that you're simply supporting an analyst vs. feeding ideas directly into your PM for the past 8yrs? I've only heard of associate -> analyst progression at MMs

Yes just supporting

have you received any feedback as to why you're not moving up? is it simply just too crowded at the top i.e. no room for promotion? if so, i'd recommend changing jobs but sounds like that still ends you up at the same place... have you interviewed for more "senior" roles? are you comfortable w/ pitching ideas and/or making the call? I'd be surprised if you don't get interviews for mid level roles given your YOE... maybe you just need to frame your resume and interview responses better
