Coatue Culture / Recent Exits
Most Coatue analysts seem relatively new. People speak often about the rough culture but does anyone have real insights?

Lot of turnover recently / YTD
yes, any idea why?
I mean you answered it yourself
"rough culture"
long hours juniors are churn and burn and some thorny personalities at the mid senior level
and its not really recently its been fairly consistent throughout the firms history
mix of fired vs leave for a culturally better opportunity?
There are firings but people understand up or out culture so my sense is a lot of people leave before they are actually axed; always feeling around
They get fired if ideas don’t work. It’s not just juniors, ppl at all levels do. But market has been ripping. That’s why a lot of the sector heads are pretty young.
It’s a good seat, but the odds you find a job that pays nearly as much if you leave is quite low. Modal outcome is going to a pod.
I was told most leave to other tiger cubs/ grand cubs or smaller SMs. Is that not true?
If only there was a tool where you can filter for ppl based on their past jobs…………..
how much are these late late 20s early 30s young sector heads getting paid?
Depends how well they and Coatue are doing that year but I’ve heard the guy who was on that Tech podcast recently was making $10+
how do titles work there? there are sector heads, MDs, GPs, regular partners. obviously GP is above partner, but how do the other roles all fit in, and does it differ from public and private?
Adding my post from another thread.
Sector heads get $2-3, juniors get 1-1.5 and the others in private get 1-5 depending on seniority.
How much are the GPs on the private side making?
Correct
Have heard first hand much higher numbers for sector heads, performance dependent of course. But $5-10 over past few years not at all unheard of, though some guys have gotten materially less and have left as a result (and for other reasons).
$2-3 for sector heads is peanuts
Rough culture but hear they pay well!
Very intense performance culture. Day to day is a contact sport where you may very well get a (figurative) bloody nose, black eye or fat lip every week or 2.
Comp is good, brand is good, people are brutal, Philippe is a maniac.
You’ll get screamed at and then fired if you’re wrong.
