Coffee chat with managing partner

Hi, I have a coffee chat with a managing partner of a hedge fund with a special situations credit group that manages $2.5B. They focus in 2 areas, one side is stressed and distressed & the other side is focused on more family-run mid-market companies that require financing for business expansion. I was just curious if anyone had any good suggestions to ask them about, especially any that you’d that would impress them.

(I’m in my final year of high school)

A few that I think of:

  • Ask about the "ticket size" (how big are the investments they're committed to).
  • What's their "appetite" over the short-medium term (what sort of investments they're targeting).
  • Where they see potential market dislocations (where valuations/prices might drop and provide an good entry point).
  • Do they focus on any specific region/jurisdiction.
  • Do they invest mainly their own funds or do they have partnership with other investors.

Hope this helps

Hey there, it's great to hear about your upcoming coffee chat! It's a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the industry and make a lasting impression. Here are a few questions that might help you steer the conversation:

  1. What led you to focus on stressed and distressed areas, as well as family-run mid-market companies?
  2. Can you share a favorite experience or deal that you've worked on in these areas?
  3. How do you see the future of special situations credit evolving, especially in the context of current market trends?
  4. What qualities do you look for in young professionals or interns joining your team?
  5. Can you share some advice for someone like me who's interested in this field and just starting to explore career options?

Remember, the goal is to show genuine interest and curiosity. It's not just about impressing them, but also about learning and building a connection. Good luck, and let me know if you need any more tips!
