cold emailed SM and got a response -- thoughts?

thoughts on this and how to proceed?

cold emailed founder at a large SM with a pitch + research + resume. I just email the most senior guy at every fund with a large holdings of my favorite ideas saying "here is my research on stock X...im wondering if you guys would consider a soph. intern...if not I also love discussing research." bull case, i get a sophomore internship and bear case, they might give me a few tips on my research process.

Just got a response saying something along the lines of "interesting. excited to speak with you, lets find a time to talk".

Any idea how to approach the convo? the founder didn't call it an interview or anything. i obviously don't want to be a dunce and misunderstand the purpose of the call. very excited too, the fund has the largest position in my favorite idea and this is the most senior guy. ive looked at this stock for hundreds of hours.

if i told you the company + sector you'd laugh at me even more.

any advice on how these kind of convos go though? should I just not prep and expect just a chat on the stock? its in a couple weeks.

edit: yo why tf did that guys comment get deleted.

I would prepare in case the founder starts asking interview questions, very low probability but not zero. Even if its not a full interview they might just ask quick questions like why are you interested in this sector, etc.

You should have very good questions prepared to ask him not just limited to the research you are doing but outside of that. Also the person might to understand your motivation for HF is it just money or genuine interest? So have a solid story prepared on what interested you in stocks.

got it. i'll have the 400 Qs down and just have interesting things to say about pitch + sector + my story, and questions for them

I used to do this all the time in college - email funds with a pitch + resume and hope to get an internship (lead to multiple convos and two internships at decent-sized funds). Most of the times I ended up speaking with the PM/someone on the team, they would ask general questions (given I had little to no formal experience) about my interests in investing, what relevant classes I had taken, how I got interested in investing, why did I look at the stock I pitched, and why I'm interested in it (lead to high-level questions about the pitch). I was never asked any technicals on these calls (I was only asked later in the interview stage and they were your basic 400Qs).

Given that they already have a large position in your idea, they know much more about it than you will at this stage (you're a sophomore, so you barely know the ABCs of investing, and this guy knows that). I'd appear humble/teachable (this is key) and talk about why it caught your eye, why it's interesting now, and what the risks are (many people forget about this). Don't dig yourself a hole by trying to act smart and open the door to nitty-gritty questions about your idea that you might be unable to answer. Be intellectually honest with yourself when presenting an idea. PMs like him probably love to see someone teachable/humble at your stage in college than some hardo.

Also, prepare some general questions about how to be on the right path in the industry, what tips he might have for you to learn more about investing, and all that crap.

Sweet, thanks so much.

honestly I’m just excited to generally talk about ideas because I’m always scouting these guys 13f and happy when they buy/hold something I find lol.

also, how many of these convos led to gigs?

I had multiple convos - I did two internships during the school year from those convos, and I'd say I was probably close in maybe another handful of conversations had I chosen to pursue them. A lot of time, though, I approached it as a way to network/learn from people and hopefully get an opportunity a year or two down the line by staying in touch with them, so I was lucky with timing when I got the internships (happened to reach out just when they needed a cheap research monkey).

Congrats for the response.
I am doing exactly the same thing but for full time roles. Just started and only got some “ we’re not hiring responses”. But there’re about 200 on my list and let’s see how it goes.
