Degree for Global Macro/Quant

Hi, for either Global Macro or Quant, what kind of degree (masters) do people think would help when it comes to breaking into those industries? I have heard that statistics, computer science, and maths are the most desirable subject matters. What do people think about finance? Do people think a masters in that would also help when it comes to these industries? Thank you.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights on degrees that can help you break into Global Macro or Quant roles:

  1. Global Macro:

    • Masters in Economics or Quantitative Finance: These are highly recommended as they provide the necessary quantitative and analytical skills.
    • PhD: Even better than a master's, a PhD can significantly enhance your eligibility for roles in this field.
    • Programming Skills: Extensive experience with programming languages like Python, R, and Matlab is crucial.
  2. Quant Roles:

    • Statistics, Computer Science, and Mathematics: These subjects are highly desirable as they provide a strong quantitative foundation.
    • Finance: While a master's in finance can be beneficial, it is generally less preferred compared to the more quantitative degrees mentioned above.

In summary, for both Global Macro and Quant roles, degrees in Economics, Quantitative Finance, Statistics, Computer Science, and Mathematics are highly valued. A master's in finance can help, but it may not be as advantageous as the other more quantitative-focused degrees.
