Developer / Hybrid Role at Hedge Fund???

Hello everyone,

Long-time lurker, first time poster here. I'm currently working as a consultant at a technology company that provides risk man.- front/mid/back office solutions to hedge funds around the globe. (I'm in NYC, and I'm not at the technical side, more at the product side.) I recently got an offer from a $5bn equity hedge fund in Hong Kong for a very hybrid role (in terms of front to back office involvement).

It's mostly a GUI development / visual risk & portfolio analytics job, with hands on risk man. focus, and most certainly does not have anything to do with investment decision making. Although programming is not my strong suit, working for a top hedge fund looks very attractive, and the comp package is really, really good.

2 questions off the top of my head:
1) How the hack would my career evolve in the hedge fund space if I start off with a gig like this? I'm not even debating my chances for front office, but how about the rest? (Particularly risk, risk tech, mid/back office)

2) Also, I don't think I would like to stay in the region for a long time. Moving from an Asian hedge fund to a European/US shop? Is that possible/common? What do you think? Experiences? Comments?

Brief profile: I'm coming from a business/markets background; I'm not a programmer, or even a CS major or something. Total experience of 5 years in Risk man + S&T + fin tech. consulting. Econ undergrad from "little ivy", and MBA from Top 15 Ivy.

Thank you!!
