Emailing for Distressed Debt HF internship

Has anybody here ever had success cold emailing pitches to get a freshman/sophomore non-return internship in distressed debt? I have many pitches (full models, memos, etc) and curious if its possible/acceptable to send to PMs at <1 bil AUM firms.

seems like the options for formal programs is limited, and I want to have a shot at the space before an SA junior summer to see if I like it.

Yes - but they have to be high quality of course. Keep in mind you will have a low conversion rate as taking on an underclassmen (or any) intern is likely a burden for most of these funds. But it shows initiative and your hit rate will likely be higher than just normal cold emails. Not too familiar with distressed but in equities most folks will be cagey if they are short the name, or even if they own it.

I did it in college and luckily got an internship via cold email at multiple funds throughout college. I emailed my resume with a pitch. I didn't include the model but just had a snip in my pitch. Formal options for such internships were rare when I was in school and very hard to get via cold email, too, unless you get lucky, someone has the time to train an intern (especially true at a smaller fund), and you have strong connections.

Do not limit yourself to a distressed debt fund as a freshman/sophomore. Widen the net, email everyone with a pitch, and see what happens.
