Equity Research vs S&T for HF exits

Hi everyone. I've received an offer from a BB for sales and trading next summer, with no specifications about the desk(s). I also had an off-cycle internship at an EB in their ER's consumer team and also converted that into a full-time. Keep in mind this EB's research is one of the best on the street and many ER analysts go to top L/S HFs after a few years.

Just thinking about exiting to a HF in the first place as I'm a bit ignorant of how their hierarchy goes. What's a better field to get experience for HFs - ER/S&T?

Sorry for the ignorance on my part, but what are the next steps for L/S analysts? Is it common for them to be in for a PM (granted they're exceptional at what they do)? Are they disposable?
