Exploring HF London - Hours?

Hi all,

I'm doing some research on the different L/S HFs in London, particularly pod shops (although I am aware macro is big in London, too), as I explore the next step in my career.

I was wondering about the hours – hopefully someone can help me with this. Do people tend to trade UK/EU stocks, or US ones? If the latter, are the hours tailored to the NYSE opening hours? Apologies if a silly question. Thanks!

Hours depend on team/PM, but generally I wouldn't imagine a difference betwen London and the US

Teams trade European stocks, but they will eventually have to trade US stocks as well, due to liquidity. Overall, book sizes tend to be smaller for teams in London.

That being said there's a few good teams at the larger shops.

That's interesting, thanks! If you have any other tips/info would really appreciate it

Have good, actionable stock pitches within a 6-12m timeframe with a view on how it will trade this quarter. Understand the business very well and how it's traded vs peers, what does the market care about? What's the EV of the trade and the risk/reward skew?

Have a couple of longs and shorts. Give me a reason to hire you vs someone that's doing our graduate program, as that is increasingly the bar you're being compared to by good teams that have top-quality choices

know of a p72 pod which trades US

since nyse starts afternoon in london - gives u time to do some morning analysis before open

altho does mean u have a late finish most nights

for macro london is THE spot due to being a fx/commodities hub asw as being able to trade europe and all of us. again not great for hours and wil depend on team ofc but u get the gist

Are you worried about the hours? If so, then if you want to be successful this might not be the right course… sure some roles you can get away with less, but most successful people I know in the field work pretty long hours.

Most people I know trading US stocks from Europe work European hours + US hours. Only exception would be people working US stocks from UAE where they might come in a bit later, ie 11:00 but then working until past midnight …
