So the other guy's comment isn't answering your question at all, I'll take a crack at it:

If a firm contacts P72 officially via background check or to confirm employment, they won't disclose anything. Funds generally are v secretive of current and ex-employee data/performance across the board - officially anyway.

What will happen, is that someone at the shop you're interviewing at will ask around his network, especially bizdev/analysts at P72 about you. Nothing is stopping them from informally explaining what happened, depending on what they know and how much they wish to disclose.

Out of curiosity and off topic, but does this culture of secrecy exist in banking, or will HR disclose?

That doesn’t stop other companies that know people at P72 to do under the table background checks on OP. This is what happened to me: I crushed a process and some asshole contacted my past employer without asking me for references. Had the head hunter not told me I never would’ve known.

OP I know this isn’t what you wanna hear but you need to literally distance yourself from any companies that you may think know your PM, or P72. Literal figurative distance. High finance has never really been forgiving for fired employees, especially former boss who may want to protect his rep if someone in his network calls him about your performance.

My advice to you is aim for other shops, stay on the down low for a bit, maybe even try changing cities or states, and/or changing industries. As someone who went through this, you’re going to need to distance yourself as best as possible. Get good at something else to help your ethos, and hard pivot completely.

HR may only disclose your dates of employment and whether you work there, but that doesn’t stop your boss from jeopardizing any future job opportunities. NEVER TRUST ANYONE IN FINANCE EVERYONE IS OUT FOR THEMSELVES.

Think you will be fine man. Totally get the other poster's point and think it has merits. But I personally witnessed my old PM (one of the biggest dbag I have see in my life) trash a former colleague / a prev analyst on the team on the phone with (supposedly) another PM he's in process with. Few months later it appears the guy still landed a seat covering the same vertical in the same city (not sure if it's with the PM on the phone but still). My understanding is people are not stupid. When you leave a pod seat, they know something went wrong. So yea if someone really like you and value your skillset, think they will take what your old PM says with a grain of salt. That's how I am thinking about it at least haha, best of luck to you. On yea PS I would stop using specific firm names like P72 in the future if I am you

Your colleague is an anecdotal; he was lucky but the fact of the matter is what I’m saying, still happened to him and it will more than likely happen to OP. Think about it. Most of these guys are literal sociopaths (to be fair you have to be one if you’re at that level), they also go to bars and socialize with other PMs in the industry. People talk and more than likely if OP applies to another company they won’t ask for references they’ll just pick someone out of their contact list and call someone at his former company. He needs to literally distance himself for now until things calm down.
