For HF ppl working in Connecticut, where do you leave? NYC or CT?

Considering a new job offer, but the fund is in CT which requires 1hour 20min to 30min commute time (now live in Manhattan). In office 3 days a week minimum, but honestly I prefer to work in office all day except earnings season - if commute time is short, no issue 5 days even during earnings season.

I heard a lot of HFs are in CT, so just curious where do you leave or do you commute 1.5 hours every day? If so, is the train reliable and what do you do on the train?

Fairfield county perosn here. Metro north new haven line is light years ahead of NJ transit. You go from grand central which is preferable, and the train is pretty reliable.

Morning commute was always pleasant for me (and you will be commuting against the crowds). Its a great place to get your reading done, and often times can result in a peaceful nap / meditative state in the morning. Afternoon commutes people are crankier but I miss my morning train ride sometimes honestly.

Anyways, as far as commuting by train goes, I consider the new haven line as a pretty good experience. NJ transit on other hand is chaotic insanity, constant delays, and rushing to your platform at the last second at port authority.

Commuting to greenwich or stamford is easy peasy. They have express trains from grand central and you get off within walking distance of most offices (1 greenwich plaza its VERY convenient, its like 10ft from the train platform to the office door).

My firm moved to Greenwich and I commute from downtown manhattan.. the train to Greenwich from grand central takes ~50 minutes and you’ll probably have to walk 10+ minutes to your office from the station. So, I’d add an hour to however long it takes you to get to GC. TBH I think the commute sucks and plan on buying a car to speed things up (currently takes me about 1 hour 40 minutes door to door). The train does come frequently and is usually on time, but I’ve found the express train is usually 5-10 minutes late

Do you have a lot of time to socialise with friends during weekdays? I don't really have time to meet with friends or socialise Mon-Fri, so frequency of commuting to work vs. commuting to socialise for me is like 3/5 vs. 1 for me, but if i'm working in LO or 9 to 5 type of job, I'd def want to live in Manhattan

Had a few friends start jobs at CT hedge fund gigs all around the same time and they contemplated getting teaming up to get a second apartment in CT so they could stay there Monday night-Thursday night. A 2 bed in Stamford is like $3k a month so you're paying like $18k a year while saving ~$300 per month on train passes and lowering your commute from ~3 hours a day to 10 minute ubers to and from the office (excluding Monday morning when you commute from NYC and Friday afternoon when you commute back to the city). They didn't actually do it though but I would have if I was them especially given how nice it would be to be in CT during the week.
