From London to Dubai

Hey mates,From people trying to move to Dubai from London, or doing interviews to move to a hedge fund in Dubai, what are your thoughts, and what are the key risks you are considering?

Pro:
No tax
Emerging country with prospect to become an ever bigger financial center
Covering emerging markets from there, where alpha can be higher

Cons:
No friends there
Very different culture
Far away from everythingLimited upside long-term (?) if country does not develop

Please let me know your thoughts.

Main benefit is tax. Why not just move to Singapore or Hong Kong? Tax there is low and they’re both kind of financial centres (HK getting less so now) so you’re derisked a little there.

HK is horrible WF balance from what I have heard, although this is in IB rather than HF, but I suspect that HF will be similar.

Unless you don't care about the longer hours, in that case it's a great place to live and work

I personally know a banker that relocated to Dubai (temporarily for a few years) to make bank and return come back to London. I can't speak for the culture but there is definitely an expat community there. The guy I know had a family so he wasn't necessarily looking to make lots of friends, but generally speaking I don't think you'll find many Analyst / Junior Associate level expats there, maybe Senior Associate and beyond
