From McKinsey to HF
Hi! I’m an incoming 4th year Applied Maths student at a semi-target UK uni, currently interning at McKinsey. This past few weeks I’ve been learning and enjoying a lot about the world of management consulting but realized it’s not my thing. I want to pivot to HF and was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to break into the industry (in the last year of my degree). Is the recruiting cycle and interview process similar to IB/consulting? What are the main points covered in technicals? Any tips and info is extremely helpful
In the states, HF recruiting is a little more episodic unless you apply to a standard program like P72 academy. I have seen some ex MBB folks end up at hedge funds but it depends on what industry/segments you cover as a consultant. Networking with folks with similar backgrounds will be key as in the US, most HFs direct HHs to ping folks that are typically from top IB or at a MF PE when they source the candidate pools.
PE -> HF is much rarer in the UK
