Fund wanted me to visit the office then changed their mind
So I just cleared a phone call with this small fund (5-10B). The interviewer was a bit disorganized, said he liked me and wanted me to fly into the office quite immediately.
While I was talking logistics, I forgot to respond for couple hours after when I said I'd get back. Then, they told me they'd actually like to set up a call first with the PM I'd be working with.
Idk if it's because I didn't respond they changed their mind and if that's an euphemism for saying I got dinged. But the whole process seemed a little weird. They seemed a bit disorganized, like they were literally figuring out the process on the go. Is this normal for smaller funds? Like there really is no structured interview process and everything is done on the fly?
Or is this a red flag?
It's because they are disorganized. Yes, it's very normal for smaller funds. They are probably doing too many things at the same time.
Don’t read too much into it. Maybe someone else in the team just wanted to have a call first before flying you in. If it’s me interviewing a candidate I’d want to see if the person is likeable / well spoken / smart. You’ll be fine.
Most HFS especially medium/smaller ones don’t recruit FO that often. So there isn’t a set process like a bank. Also many haven’t been doing as much recruiting or any in person for 2 years now.
Believe me, if you were dinged, they would not waste the PM’s time on you.
best guess is that someone said, let me talk to person X before we spend time and money to fly them in.
second this, have seen this too. PMs wouldn't waste time unless you were in the running. small HFs also lean, so recruiting process more ad hoc
