Handy Bloomberg Tips
Hi all!
Current IB analyst, prospective L/S equities analyst, and Bloomberg noob here (we use FactSet and I only recently discovered we had BBG).
Getting a refresher from the horse’s mouth next week, but I don’t usually find these tutorials overly helpful.
In the interim, I would love to learn about some handy functions from you lot to help with both recruiting prep (eg fund info, help with developing pitches etc.) and the role itself.
Given my inexperience with the software, it will be better for all of us if you treat me like a golden retriever when responding.
Thanks in advance,
- Oz
Hi Oz-Medici, just because I'm a bot doesn't mean I don't have feelings...I'm hoping these links are helpful. If not, feel free to throw monkey shit at me...
More suggestions...
Hope that helps.
Following
GP, CN, GPC, WACC, FA, DES, BI, BICO, SPLC, DDIS, CAST are pretty much all I use.
Please don’t use BBG for WACC… it’s going to spit out like 11% for a defensive large cap… you’ll end up pitching everything as a short
Yes I agree with this, it’s straightforward to devise a WACC yourself.
Literally all I use is DES, GP, CN and FA
Anything else just type HELP HELP and some poor Bloomberg goon will point you in the right direction
POSH
NI SPEC
QUIZ
RELS and make market monitors (NW)
I enjoy using SPLC sometimes, found some interesting derivative names for pitches before
Would follow up on this and ask what’s your fav bbg excel functions! Also does anyone here know how to get financials from bbg excel similar to fact set?
pretty easy - get the excel plug in for bb - then use use =bdp(ticket, field) you field fields under FLDS - probably an even better way but this is what do.
For example =bdp("aapl us equity","trail_12m_ebitda"). Of course you can set this up with formulas to to pull from a column of tickers and rows of different fields.
QMGR - bid ask quotes
PRTU - can make custom porfolios
ALRT - can set up custom alerts
DSCO - document search
FLDS - find fields for excel
CRPR - rating history
GRIB - screen grab for sharing in IB
IBSR - search IBs
SRCH - can make customer screens
NIM - new issue monitor
CCB - industry classification
FLAGS - codes for emojis in IB
BRC - if you have broker research enabled, pulls up research reports
EQRV - equity comps
YAS - yields
JOBS - job postings
