Hedge Fund Prospect
Hey Everyone:
Although this may website may not be one for me since I am still a high schooler, please excuse my naiveté on these topics. I am currently in my senior year of high school and looking to major in Finance. After college I really want to go work for a hedge fund and work my way up. Though the money seems very attractive, I am in for this job primarily because I have a strong interest in investing. IF possible, I would want to be able to skip Investment Banking, and go straight into a hedge fund. Does anyone have any legitimate advice on what I should plan on doing, where I should go for undergrad hiring hedge funds and where to get internships in college?
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Also if anyone has any links to where I could learn more about investing, hedge funds, and PE that'd be great!
HYP or Wharton
There are not many hedge funds who recruit out of college and almost all funds that do recruit are recruiting for quant roles -- Two Sigma, Citadel, D.E. Shaw all recruit, but for quant. The notable exception is Bridgewater, which has investment banking associate positions for undergrads. I would add Dartmouth and Columbia to thebrofessor's list, although HYP,Wharton are definitely the top 4. Figure out what type of investing you want to do, but know that nobody out of undergrad will be managing any money and likely not recommending trades/investments either. Regardless of which college you end up at, I think it's good to do a strong course-load of econ/math/stats/compsci. It's pretty much required of all undergrads going to quant and non-quant roles. Even in a non-quant position, you would still be doing a lot of data analysis in your first few years at an HF out of undergrad.
When you get to college (assuming you get into one of those recommended), look up the alumni network. You may be able to filter for hedge fund and reach out to alumni, see if you can shadow during breaks in your first couple years and try to convert one of them into a summer internship. I think most hedge funds have internships available for undergrads, but are not well-advertised and they typically don't recruit on-campus; Bridgewater is really the only one I recall seeing actively recruiting on-campus.
Lastly, you should be focusing on the 3-month horizon, which is getting into the best college you can. Thinking about getting into a hedge fund at this point is almost like thinking about how you'll spend your lottery winnings. First you have to win the lotto.
