I know this isn’t what you are asking for (and sort of mentioned it in your post) but the internal HF teams within the large pension funds are some of the best bets in terms of money managers in Canada. Great reputations, sophisticated investors, and solid (although not like US HFs) pay. It is definitely a place to look at if you haven’t already.
