HF Pros - How do you Model a Short Position?

IB analyst here.

Curious to know how you’d model a short position.

Would you forecast an operating model and stress test downsides on a short structure with sensitivities for various line items?

Any and all colour appreciated.

As far as models go, no different from a long position, really...That said, there are critical variables to keep an eye on that are unique to short positions - i.e., borrow, short interest, liquidity, etc - though I typically evaluate the aforementioned variables before committing real time to any potential short idea. No one wants to spend the time ramping on a new name/building model/making calls only to arrive at the conclusion that the short is way too crowded for comfort.

Hope that's helpful. Cheers
