Decent returns as a long/short credit fund. The issue is that they gated clients at one stage and that has made it almost impossible to raise money despite the decent returns. David is an interesting character (he's British) and a bit of a perma-bear so enjoyable to chat with about short ideas. One point to note is that David's partner left for a high yield trading role at GS last year which came as a surprise but is probably related to comp. One of the senior guys I spoke to told me that comp is in the £300k range (split 50/50 between base/bonus) which is okay for London but nowhere near what you would get at a large fund (would expect senior guys in London to be getting around £500-600k all in in decent years). Good place to work for a few years and the analysts there are decent so a good place to learn event driven credit.

I doubt the partners earn that little, but given that a HY trader at a bank makes around 7-8% of P&L and a bank like GS will have a large flow business that allows a trader to generate tens of millions in P&L, I am guessing the guy who left can earn >£1m at GS....probably more than what he was making at Ironshield.

At partner level (even at KingStreet and the larger shops) its almost all "eat-what-you-kill" and linked to P&L so really returns dependent. Would expect multi-million £ payouts in good years.
