Lateral move - Reaching out directly to other HFs?

Is there any downside in just reaching out to other HFs when you're trying to do a lateral move? A bunch of larger HFs have a "Career" page with some job offers, or a standard email address. Just wondering if there's any downside in doing this. What about reaching out to analysts in other HFs?

Overall I'm trying to find alternatives to headhunters to do a lateral move.

By lateral move I mean moving from a HF to another HF.
