Leveraging Connections into HF summer Internship

I'm a sophomore in college (you could say "semi-target" for what it's worth). For one of my classes I'm researching the economic benefits of hedge funds. I emailed a handful of school alums in smaller HF's asking for insight on the topic: personal anecdotes, more resources, etc. After having some back-and-forth with a few of them, I feel like I've shown my interest and knowledge (at least for a UG biz student) for the industry.

Considering that I'm still looking for summer '19 internship opportunities, it seems like I should leverage these connections to my advantage. They're all smaller firms with no formal internship programs that I could find, so it's a role that I would have to sell them on. How should I go about inquiring and "selling" myself as a good fit for a role that, technically, doesn't exist?

TL;DR - How do I convert past convos about research for a school project to a cold (lukewarm?) email about internship opportunities for myself?
