Life in West Palm Beach

I'm gonna be working full time in wpb at one of the hedge funds there. I didn't intern there before joining as a new grad, so I've never been to wpb, but what's it like working there?

What's the scene? Where do people working in similar places hangout? How do you really network there outside of ur firm?

Any info or advice would be awesome.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, West Palm Beach (WPB) offers a unique lifestyle compared to traditional financial hubs like NYC. While WPB is known for its warm weather and luxurious vibe, it’s also a smaller, more intimate financial scene. Here’s what you should know:

  1. Networking and Social Scene:

    • WPB has a tight-knit financial community, so networking often happens in more casual, social settings. Look for events at country clubs, upscale bars, or charity galas.
    • Many professionals in hedge funds or private equity in South Florida have local ties, which can make breaking into social circles a bit challenging. However, being proactive and attending industry events or meetups can help.
  2. Hangout Spots:

    • Upscale restaurants and bars in areas like Clematis Street or The Square (formerly CityPlace) are popular for after-work drinks and networking.
    • Country clubs and golf courses are also significant hubs for networking, as they cater to the affluent crowd in WPB.
  3. Cultural Fit:

    • South Florida, including WPB, has a distinct culture. It’s laid-back compared to NYC, but the financial industry still demands high performance. Adapting to the local lifestyle while maintaining a professional edge is key.
  4. Advice for Networking Outside Your Firm:

    • Join local professional organizations or alumni groups if available.
    • Attend conferences or events in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, as the broader South Florida area has a growing finance scene.
    • Leverage LinkedIn to connect with professionals in the area and set up coffee chats.

WPB offers a mix of luxury and opportunity, but success in networking and fitting in will require effort and adaptability.
