L/S Idea Pitching

I have an interview lined up with a MM HF within their Fintech / Payments group as a entry level analyst.

I have a few software pitches ready but not any fintech / payments.

This may be super obvious but is it expected I pitch them a fintech / payments name during the interview process or would my software name be okay?

For an interview with a Fintech/Payments group at a multi-manager hedge fund, it’s generally expected that your pitch aligns with the sector they focus on. Based on the most helpful WSO content, tailoring your pitch to the fund's strategy and sector is crucial. If you pitch a software name unrelated to fintech/payments, it might signal a lack of preparation or understanding of their focus.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Prepare a Fintech/Payments Pitch: Even if it’s last minute, prioritize crafting at least one solid pitch in the fintech/payments space. This demonstrates your ability to align with their investment focus and shows you’ve done your homework.

  2. Leverage Your Software Pitches: If you’re short on time, you can still use your software pitches but frame them in a way that ties into fintech/payments. For example, highlight how the software company could disrupt or integrate with the payments ecosystem.

  3. Do Your Due Diligence: Research the fund’s philosophy and the PM’s preferences. If they’re long-term investors, focus on the company’s strategic positioning. If they’re more short-term, emphasize catalysts and valuation.

Ultimately, showing sector-specific knowledge and tailoring your pitch to fintech/payments will give you a stronger edge in the interview.
