MF REPE -> HF?

Am going to be a summer analyst at a top REPE shop (bx, kkr, stwd) this summer. I previously was dead set on RE, hence why I chose this path. However, I recently started chatting with some HF folks and this seems like something that might be more up my alley.

1) Are there are HF’s that have real estate teams (not sculptor or Angelo but more so the SM or MM shops)?

2) can the skills developed in REPE transfer over to HF at all?

3) Is an MBA absolutely necessary to make this transition?

Thanks!!

Yes, they exist, but pretty rare. Also from my knowledge, they prefer backgrounds from the real estate credit side so an internal move wouldn’t hurt.

Sans personal interest reasons, don’t think the move would be worth it from a risk-adjusted standpoint, you are in a MF buyside seat that is coveted for many reasons, some of those reasons being pay and the name brand (if KKR/BX). Land the FT first and doors will open whenever you decide you want to commit to a move.

Fir Tree have been on some interesting deals though - know they’re in a legal battle with SBB . Believe MS bought pref on this a few months before Fir tree tried to enforce their bond position
