Minimum time after bonus before resigning
Hello,
To make it short I am thinking of move from my current fund after the 2023 bonus is paid.
How long would you say is the minimum time after the bonus is paid to resign while not pissing your former boss ?
Would 1 month be enough or would u wait longer ?
Thanks
Ignore title. Fuck pissing people off, this is your life. I am waiting no later than the same week. It’s the same principle either way so might as well rip the band aid off.
Dude I promise you 99% he’s going to be pissed even if u didn’t take the bonus back (don’t ask me how I know), so just take it and leave the next day
I resigned from my last HF the day after my bonus hit. Not even 24 hours later.
It's fairly normal to resign 24 hours after the bonus lands in your account, don't worry about it. there's a 50/50 chance you'll be given a few weeks to transition your work to another analyst vs being immediately escorted out of the building by security.
Why do you feel obligated to wait to leave after receiving it? Presumably you don’t get your bonus on the First of January, so by the time you get paid you’re already leaving a portion of the current year’s bonus on the table.
True this is why I don't want to wait too long.
But, ans this was said on this forum, it is a small world, a good recommandation from previous bosses always help, and they are treating me fairly, I just think I have learned most of what I could learn in this position and I would like to move on to keep growing, but I don't want to leave in bad terms
When is it typical for bonuses to be paid? middle of January - middle of February?
Yes around Feb/March
Thanks everyone for your answers. Guess I won't wait long !
Once the cash hits the account.
Why are you quitting?
homie getting more cheddar elsewhere...
As said 24hrs is the usual expectation. It is actually insulting to the new firm if you do not resign right away like are you gonna renege on them? Believe it or not it happens I have seen people renege cause their boss/management would not let them quit.
Wait 48-72 hours until the cash hits the account then resign.
I wouldn't put it past people to try to not pay you if you resign right after they tell you.
But I agree with posters above. They will not give 0.01 fucks about you when you leave aside from basic professional courtesy.
I would say that if you're on a project that absolutely needs you and it would help the team a bit if you stayed an extra month, then maybe do it as a kind gesture. I have done that before. I don't think anyone really will remember or care.
It is definitely professional courtesy to have in your mind, pre-resignation, what a transition plan for your work would look like and an estimated time frame. Getting models fully updated, getting others up to speed on situations, coordinating work flow handoffs between third parties, etc. I have brought this up in all of my resignation conversations with an offer to stay for the next two weeks -> month to ensure a smooth hand off of materials. Everyone has been appreciative of that offer and most have taken me up on it. But as mentioned, once you give notice management's attitude towards you can immediately change and they do not GAF about you. One firm I resigned from agreed to have me stay for 2 weeks to transition materials, and the next day when I came in changed their mind and told me they'd just figure it out and I should go home.
24 hours after cash hits account.
Yup, it's unanimous -- you can quit the day after the money is deposited in your bank account. Your boss will be pissed, but waiting an extra month won't make him any less pissed, so just get it over with.
If you want to stay on his good side, then tell him you're willing to stay on for as long as he needs to find a replacement and transfer your knowledge. Odds are they won't accept your offer and will lock you out of the building immediately, but they will appreciate that you offered.
