ML masters?

So there’s a good chance I’m going to pursue a masters in ML right out of college. I’m also going to do fintech role in a top tier bank that will about 40 hours on the west coast. After I complete my degree I want to either get in an HF or pivot internally at the bank to a QR role. I’ve heard PHD’s in CS are becoming more relevant for HF employment. I want to hear just how big that barrier is and if it might be worth going back for a phd later.
