My comp just got cut by 40%

Hi Everyone,

My boss just cut my comp by 40% after I held his feet to the fire in paying me a bonus owed from last year. He said it’s due to financial situation which I can respect for reasons of COVID but based on our relationship from the last year he’s just being emotional and his way of counter acting the bonus. We grew by 50% last year but this year has been extremely slow. He’s blaming me for how slow it’s been this year which I’m fully willing to take accountability for but think it’s a little extreme given the growth we’ve had and the hopefully temporary slowness we are currently in.

What would you do?

Sounds like the relationship is strained and it probably makes sense for you to look for other opportunities.

Did your boss cut your base, your expected comp, bonus?

If things have been slow this year the way I would expect this to be reflected is in your bonus. Of course your boss could also fire you if performance is that bad. But in general, in this industry, that is what the bonus is there for, you reward good years and pay you less if you don’t perform.

The fact you had to argue for your bonus says a lot and I imagine it will continue to be this way. I generally avoid firms/managers that have me fight for the right number, that usually means you’ll be underpaid.
