Point72 London Reputation/Prestige

Just wanted to gauge what is the reputation of Point72 in London? Received an invite to an exclusive Insight Day at the firm and while I am definitely going, just wanted to know how respected/prestigious is it in the City at this stage?

A recruiter emailed me and asked to set up an informational phone chat which doubled as a screening interview. They had a CV Drop at my uni as well sometime in October after an on-campus event so I guess this built from that

Was recently speaking to people about the London HF scene. I’m not based there so this may not be 100% as my information has come only anecdotally from folks on the other side.

As mentioned above, Point72 has its academy programme which is one of the most thorough grad programmes in the industry. There are only a few funds as far as I know that hire out of college in London for non quantitative roles: MAN Group, DE Shaw, Point72, Citadel, and Capula. (Marshall Wace and Two Sigma only have quant roles to my knowledge). I believe MAN and Capula are more Europe-focussed than the rest and that’s why you don’t hear them much on these forums. But nonetheless, they are also well respected.

Point72 is founded by Steven Cohen, who used to run SAC Capital. SAC Capital was churning out great returns back in its day and so I believe Point72 is really riding on the reputation which Cohen built for himself. Point72 continues to attract very bright kids interested in a career in investing and so remains extremely competitive. Having the opportunity to be part of the Academy I believe would be a great learning experience and of course many would say prestigious. Whether it’s more prestigious than other funds or whether it’s more prestigious than XYZ group at XYZ bank, I can’t really give you an answer.

However, I would encourage you to read about SAC Capital and what went down a couple years back. From a personal point of view, I wouldn’t want to work there because of its history etc. But I know that’s a polarising statement and I don’t wish to get into that debate. Read about it and form your own view point.
