Reaching out to HH etiquette
Not 100% set on leaving my current role but would like to know the opportunity set in terms of who is hiring and who’s not. Is it fine to reach out to recruiters to tell them that I’m not urgently looking to leave but would leave / interview for the right role? Or should you only reach out to them if you’re dead set on leaving and want to start interviewing right away. Ultimately it’s their job to place people so I understand how they wouldn’t want to deal with time wasters. At the HF level, it just seems abit different from how structured PE recruiting was.

Very acceptable if you are respectful of their time and you are genuinely trying to make a connection versus just seeing how things are out there. Also prepare to answer "why you not ready to leave yet", "what is your current comp and possible retentions", "when you are considering to move forward and the #1 thing you looking for in a change". The reality is the headhunter is stupid to not take a genuine inquiry, cause they can then see if you match the right role and come back to you right away, it happens all the time. But to more it seems fishing from your end or theirs the less value you will both get.
Hedge funds do not formally recruit you are correct so many times you will talk to a headhunter who says there is nothing for now, than Joe quits next week and they will be calling you asap.
Thank you
