Retail Investment-Focused Hedge Funds

I am currently seeking a summer internship in the financial industry, either doing marketing for a hedge fund or in a more quantitative role as a retail analyst intern for a hedge fund that is primarily focused on consumer and retail investments.

I am not yet an upperclassman, have only had one experience in the financial industry, and my undergraduate degree is in communications, so I figured that an analyst intern position at a big bank would be a long shot. Does anyone know of any hedge funds/smaller investment banking firms whose portfolios are skewed towards retail investments? I am interested in exploring this arena of the industry, and feel that a smaller firm may be more sympathetic to my non-finance (primarily editorial and marketing) background. Any advice to offer?

Thanks!

I don't know about retail focused HFs, but check out Peter J. Solomon. They have a very strong franchise in retail ibanking.

For hedge funds, I would suggest working backwards - think of a retail company you like and could talk about in an interview. Take a look at the top holders of that stock. Those could be firms you target (the list will include mutual funds, HFs, pensions, etc.).

The farther down the list you go, (generally) the smaller the fund. You can click around to see what other holdings they have and maybe you'll find some that are focused on retail or have a significant concentration of names in the sector.

Here's CMG: http://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/cmg/institutional-holdings#.URQiTx1EFLc

I don't think you'll find many HFs that are sector specific though. Larger funds will have teams that cover the different sectors.
