Sophomore Summer?

I’m a rising sophomore interested in eventually working at a hedge fund. I’m trying to figure out what kind of experience would set me up best going into junior year recruiting. I have a call coming up with a senior person in ER at a BB and want to make sure I’m thinking clearly about what’s realistic and where to focus. I know working at a smaller fund is one option for next summer, but I’ve also heard equity research could be worth exploring. Ideally, I’d like something paid. It feels like everything is moving earlier each year, and having something lined up sophomore summer seems more important than ever. Just looking for insight into what’s realistic to aim for and any advice on how to approach this upcoming call and similar ones with HFs that might take me sophomore summer.

Fastest way to get experience is to join a finance club on campus. They usually have a list of alumni so use that for networking and explain everything relevant you did in the club on your resume. It really is a pain, and this might not help in the moment but you just need to relax and enjoy life. At the end of the day it all comes down to how a random outsourced HR recruiter feels when they are going over your application. Make sure to enjoy your time in college, it flies by quickly! (I will be graduating in just a few months)

Appreciate the response, definitely hear you. I’m actually in a finance club on campus already and just finished my internship for this summer, so I’m not coming in totally cold. Just trying to figure out how to best position myself for recruiting for junior year and make sure I’m thinking strategically about sophomore summer so I can set myself up well.

Focus on recruiting for ib this fall and if you do it right you will have your offer by end of january. Once you will have that internship name for junior year at a big name, it will be much easier finding an internship for sophmore summer at a hedge fund. I know many who did this.

I’ve heard the opposite - that students lock in their sophomore summer internship before recruiting starts (sometime in late fall / early winter) so they can put “Incoming _____” on their resume. Would you recommend this for IB recruiting, or does it not really matter?
