They are precisely the reason student loan debt will never be forgiven. Too valuable to have an asset you can securitize that has effectively 0 default risk. Just imagine the house of cards you could build on top of something like that...
Federal student loans (the only type eligible for government forgiveness) have not been privately issued since 2010 (see Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010) and have since comprised a smaller portion of ABS issuance.
