I am wondering what some of the best commodity-focused funds are in NYC. Also wondering how valued investment banking experience in an energy group would be for one of these funds.

I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but I'd be extremely wary of joining a commodities hedge fund as your first trading job. Given the massively cyclical nature of the business, you are almost guaranteed to see massive outflows and resultant fund closures at some point in a matter of years, not decades.
So here's my question: how long do you think this cycle will last and when the downturn will start?
My concern with a physical trading firm at this point is that while you're learning the ropes, you might miss out on the supercycle and you just stay at the physical house in a tough market

Totally agree with this.
Working in IB focusing on energy companies can/will help you pivot but I think you have a better shot at trading having a scheduling/operations role first instead of IB. Only downside to that is IB pays better to start.
