Track record - PM MM

Hello guys,
Posting anonymously to be able to give more details but I am a frequent user or WSO.

After 5YoE, at 2 SM 2 HFs, stayed 4y et the first and been at the 2nd for 1.5y. I am very happy and managing my strategies as a quant researcher. However I don't have a formula bonus, and I was told it won't happen.
So I would like to try my luck as getting a PM place at a MM.

I wanted to ask what level of details you give regarding your track record. I don't have the right to share any information about my current firm, including the performance of my own strategies and so I am wondering how I am supposed to show other firms that my strategies work
well.

What level of details is needed to get a good position: mentioning during the interviews the main metrics of my track record is enough ?
Do I need to write down some numbers, some graphs, some Excel files, etc...

Thanks for your help

I would do everything verbal. Provide Business Development / HHs a Sharpe Ratio range, a Capital Allocation range, rough max historical drawdown, and cumulative $ P+L inception to date. That should get you pretty far. Someone will likely ask for more detail at some point - push back if you can. If not and you really need to provide something, give them verbal monthly numbers for performance and they can jot it down, but do not do this until far along. I think most business development people are actually pretty decent people who care about keeping conversations confidential (if they didn’t, people would not want to talk to them), but it’s a small world at the end of the day.

One last comment, due to the risk that any of this gets back to where you work, it is not a free option to have conversations. I would recommend against opportunistically shopping and only pursue if you are reasonably serious. At the end of the day, it sounds like you have a reasonable seat. If you perform well in this world, you generally have the leverage to get what you want and to be compensated well/fairly. Good luck.

5 years is also early to get a pm seat. Not saying it’s impossible, but don’t be frustrated if you don’t have a ton of luck. You just haven’t seen enough to make decisions about capital allocation (no offense) and most biz dev folks will know that.

put differently, there are TONS of analysts at MM firms (and non-MM firms) with 10+ YOE who are still analysts.
