Up & coming opportunistic credit funds?

Hi guys:

What do you think are some up and coming opportunistic credit funds / teams that will have a lot of growth, do really well, have a lot of opportunities in the next 10 years? Not looking for guys who are already giants like Oaktree but for funds (public or private focused) that will have the highest velocity. Thanks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights into opportunistic credit funds and teams that could see growth and opportunities in the coming years:

  1. Smaller, Niche Players: Funds like Mudrick, Farmstead, Caspian, Knighthead, and Warlander are mentioned as having strong potential. These funds often focus on distressed or special situations and can offer significant learning opportunities and competitive compensation, though seats are rare.

  2. Direct Lending Opportunities: Many credit-focused distressed funds have shifted towards direct lending due to the crowded nature of liquid distressed markets. This space, particularly in private middle-market lending, has seen growing capital deployment since the recession and could continue to expand.

  3. Sector-Specific Opportunities: While large-scale distressed opportunities have been limited, sector-specific movements (e.g., energy in 2014-2016) have provided opportunities. Funds that can identify and capitalize on these sector-level trends may see growth.

  4. Emerging Markets and Sovereign Wealth Funds: Teams associated with sovereign wealth funds like ADIA, GIC, and Temasek, or those targeting emerging markets, could see significant growth as they diversify their portfolios and explore opportunistic credit strategies.

  5. Entrepreneurial and Ad Hoc Approaches: Funds that adopt a more entrepreneurial spirit, focusing on private management teams and negotiated terms, may thrive in the evolving credit landscape. This approach is particularly relevant in the private middle-market lending space.

While these funds and strategies show promise, it's essential to monitor market dynamics and fund performance over time to identify the true "up-and-comers" in the opportunistic credit space.
