US HF recruiting for Canadians

Anyone know how recruiting for US HFs for Canadians works? How open are HFs to hiring Canadians with TN visas? I'd imagine you'd work with headhunters or does cold applying work as well? Interested in hearing any stories or any information!

Pretty difficult unless you're a "traditional" candidate (i.e. analyst at a BB or an associate at one of the top PE firms). But still possible if you're a strong candidate. If I remember correctly, a few people went to Citadel/MMs from one of the market neutral shops in Toronto. And there is this young guy from Queen's who landed a US gig by sharing quality research on Twitter. I think he's at a long-only not a HF though.

You should definitely reach out to recruiters, but they won't be helpful unless you're a traditional candidate.

I think bschool is a good option as well - this should solve the visa problem too.

Thanks and SB'ed. Do analysts in ER at BB's count as a "traditional candidate" or is it IB only? Thanks for the B school recommendation, definitely considering it but would have  thought funds would be more open given the TN visa which seems quite easy to get.

Great insight, do you mind sharing the name/handle of that guy who shared quality research on Twitter? I'd like to take a look at it.

Have a college buddy who is very sharp and could easily be a HF guy and seems to be in with that crowd as far as I know, however he is Canadian so he has mentioned that visa stuff has kinda kept him somewhat in his PE firm (which actually is kinda like a HF but maybe more so considered a PE firm). HFs can sponsor prob as far as I know but it seems less common in my personal experience. I think he may be going through the visa process to become a dual citizen maybe. Not sure where he stands but he seems to be doing well in the meantime as a principal at one of the top PE firms around in my humble opinion
