What are the all-time relaxation techniques for HF?

Life can be stressful if you prioritise the wrong things and dont accept the finite nature of life and the resources that you want so badly.

So how to relax? Suggestions could be group (with the brahs) or solo (Old School).

To get the small shrunken ball rolling I enjoy some Indie music from the community college my firm donates to.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some effective relaxation techniques tailored for high-stress environments like hedge funds (HF). These can be done solo or with a group, depending on your preference:

Solo Relaxation Techniques

  1. Meditation

    • Practice mindful meditation for 15 minutes daily. Focus on your breath and redirect your thoughts when they wander. This helps create mental separation from stress and trains your brain to manage anxiety better.
    • For a modern take, check out resources like Sam Harris' meditation guides.
  2. Exercise

    • Even 15 minutes of vigorous exercise can significantly reduce stress. Cardio, weightlifting, or even a quick walk outside can release endorphins and improve your mood.
    • Cold showers post-workout can amplify relaxation—start with 30 seconds and build up to 2 minutes.
  3. Journaling

    • Reflect on your day, identify stress triggers, and plan actionable steps to mitigate them. Journaling can also help you focus on gratitude and positive aspects of life.
  4. Dopamine Fast

    • Occasionally, try a dopamine fast: no food, talking, technology, or exercise. Focus solely on meditation, walking, and journaling to reset your mind.
  5. Stoic Principles

    • Spend 10 minutes reading stoic philosophy. It can help you reframe challenges and focus on what truly matters.
  6. Music Therapy

    • Indie music, as you mentioned, is a great way to unwind. Create a playlist of calming or nostalgic tracks to help you relax.

Group Relaxation Techniques

  1. Social Connection

    • Spend time with friends or colleagues you enjoy being around. Even a 10-minute call to family or close friends can dramatically reduce anxiety and bring clarity.
  2. Group Workouts

    • Join a fitness class or organize a group run. Physical activity combined with social interaction can be a powerful stress reliever.
  3. Shared Hobbies

    • Engage in activities like gaming, cooking, or even a casual sports match with your "brahs." Shared experiences can help you decompress and strengthen bonds.
  4. Music or Dance Sessions

    • Blast some heavy metal, indie, or any genre you love and let loose. Dancing or simply enjoying music together can be surprisingly therapeutic.
  5. Weekend Plans

    • Plan group outings or activities in advance. Having something to look forward to can help you push through tough weeks.

Additional Tips

  • Sleep and Nutrition: While sleep might be limited, prioritize quality over quantity. Eat healthy to maintain energy and mood.
  • Breaks and Sunlight: Take short breaks during the day to stretch, walk, or get some sunlight. It’s great for reducing anxiety and improving focus.
  • "Don't Give a F***" Mindset: Sometimes, it’s okay to let go and not stress over every detail. Sleep in occasionally or take a day off to recharge.

These techniques are not magic bullets but can lead to incremental improvements over time. Consistency is key to seeing long-term benefits.
