What is the value of networking for HF / LevFin / Distressed Debt / other non IB (and what firms?)

When it comes to IB / PE Internships, networking is crucial to even getting the first interview. Is this the same case for other high finance internships?

I'm looking to find a 2026 role in LA specifically, there's not many Non-Bank firms out there that seem to hire summer interns. Would blasting these few firms with networking chats have any impact on getting the first interview (out-of-state non-target school), or would one need to intern in another city and then move to LA for a FT position given how few opportunities there seems to be here.

Slightly disconnected questions. Insight on any would be great.
