Why are the top fundamental trades underperforming so much?

The most famous investors and traders seem to be fundamental ones like Buffett and Soros, but why aren't they doing so well recently? I read that Buffett's returns when adjusted for inflation are hardly better than the market. All the big name fundamentalists that are still active seem to really old and have their heyday in the 80's or something. The fastest growing funds are quant, and you don't hear about any young guys being called the next Buffet or Soros.
