Are we all overpaying for gaming licenses? Compliance costs spiraling out of control

I've been reviewing our licensing costs for 2024 and something doesn't add up. We're running a white label operation with about 3,000 active players monthly, and we're paying €120,000 annually for our Malta MGA license plus another €40,000 in ongoing compliance costs. Our platform provider (major B2B supplier) already holds their own MGA license and handles most of the technical compliance. Are we essentially paying twice for the same regulatory coverage? I'm starting to wonder if we should have gone with a more cost-effective jurisdiction given our business model. What's everyone else's experience with matching license type to actual operational needs?

This is a common misconception in the industry. Malta MGA and Isle of Man licenses carry premium costs for good reason - they provide access to regulated European markets and significant brand credibility with payment processors. However, you raise a valid point about white label operations. If your platform provider holds the primary license and you're operating under their infrastructure, you may indeed be duplicating compliance expenses unnecessarily. The key question is whether you're targeting regulated markets where that MGA badge actually opens doors, or if you're primarily serving international players who wouldn't differentiate between jurisdictions. Have you analyzed your player base by geography? That should inform your licensing strategy more than anything else.
