Shorting Shamu?

Farthest thing from Free Willy…..

So while enjoying a nice eggnog and rum I decided to watch the documentary “Blackfish” on Netflix at the recommendation of my Dad. As a quick summary, it follows the life the main male Orca (killer whale) at SeaWorld who has been involved in the deaths of 3 people(2 trainers and a visitors). The documentary covers the terrible conditions and treatment of these animals which would lead to their dangerous behavior. The filmmakers seem to also imply a fair amount of cover up on the behalf of SeaWorld.

Besides just making me both sad and angry I started to wonder what the effect of this documentary is going to have on the company (if any.) Quick and Christine Aguilera dirrty background on SeaWorld(NYSE: SEAS) is that it was bought by Blackstone in 2009 who IPO’d them in April of this last year to a current market cap of $2.7b~. The Company is taking an aggressive response trying to discredit the film with full page ads in many newspapers this past week.

I would highly recommend taking some time to watch the movie because in all honesty if 50% of the stuff actually occurred as the movie suggests then the guys running the show down in Orlando make some of these guys on the Street look like choirboys. Has anyone been watching this situation or have any solid insight?

Happy Holidays Everyone
