The Retail Apocalypse Continues
Brookstone filed for bankruptcy today, continuing a trend of retailers losing business in the digital age. 2017 was a record year for store closings and will probably be topped by 2018 as even household names such as Sears, JCPenney and Macy's close stores across the country. This has also lead to nearly half a million job losses since 2002 in retail, with ecommerce only adding less than half as many jobs back.
What does the future of retail look like? Will malls eventually be eliminated from nearly everywhere except for larger metro areas as retail moves online? It seems like Amazon Wardrobe may have figured out a way around some of the problems of ordering clothing online. I've even found that doing some of my grocery shopping online is easier. How many people here still make a significant amount of their retail purchases at physical stores/shopping malls?
