What's the best online brokerage?
I could not find any recent discussions on online brokerages. I was wondering what website would be best for a individual that wants to start trading. I will be investing less than $1000, so the lower the fees the better. Thanks.
at that level, try robinhood if you can get an invite, or wealthfront/betterment/motif
What's the rate like for them?
no idea
Robinhood's virtue is that it's free, but its selection is lacking beyond higher-profile stocks and funds, and it doesn't have much analytic or complex trade functionality to speak of (speaking as a user). That being said, since it's free, worth a try if it suits your needs.
After further researching robin hood, I think it would be the best option for me. I only intend to trade well known stocks for now anyways, and considering the small amount of money I will be investing, free trades will definitely help.
I like TradeKing
TDAmeritrade ThinkorSwim...because mkt data is free if you open a retirement account (retirement accounts get free mkt data at TD), and then link your other accounts. Its simple to do...is a good platform, and fees are decent.
$1000 is not much tho...$10/stock trade & $20/option trade fee is a big % at that size. You won't be able to trade futures either, cuz the account is too small. Better to save up to 3-4,000 before you try trading.
I have around 7.5 K saved, but I am rather hesitant about putting all my assets into stocks.
Any ideas on Firstrade, anyone used them? I'm based in Europe btw.
Interactive Brokers if you are located in Europe/not in the US.
Problem with IB is that, if you are not trading frequently, monthly fee would be quite significant even if you start with a $10k-$20k portfolio.
Fair point, but fees are waived if commissions are at least $10/mo, and for balances $2000 the commission hurdle is at $20/mo IIRC.
But again, the USP of IB that they do not require having a SSN to trade NYSE.
Robin Hood is great for vanilla trades
ZacksTrade is $0.01/share, clears thru IB, no inactivity fees.
Personally use Schwab and think it has one of the better platforms for online. Also has excellent customer service.
Trading platforms for personal money (Originally Posted: 07/12/2017)
Hey guys,
For those that trade their own money, what platform do you use? I currently use Fidelity but am looking to switch. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks
I use TD Ameritrade, not really sure the differences.

Best trading platform? (Originally Posted: 03/01/2018)
Hey all,
Pretty straightforward --- Had TD Ameritrade before, but had to close my acct because my firm wants everyone in house.
My options are Charles Schwab or Merill. Obviously I can use my firms platform as well, but I don't plan on doing so. Any pros and cons between the 2? I haven't really heard anything on Merills, but I know Schwab has street edge. Is it any good? No delay?
SSE from Schwab is an amazing platform, they've got great customer service as well. I prefer Schwab just because of the platform though.
Cheap online brokerage accounts outside of US (Originally Posted: 05/29/2013)
Hello fellow monkeys I am quite new to buying stocks, and wanted to get some advise from your side on which online brokerage I might use to buy US and internationals stocks. I've found Schwab being the most popular, however when i saw that you have to put 10 k minimum on your account before you start has frightened me, since normally for US citizens the minimum you put is 1000 dollars
I dont want to be an active trader, just want to save some money and to try investing into stocks,
just use optionhouse its cheap
I've used Just2Trade - its dirt cheap but takes a while to get set up
Thanks a lot!
(repost) please help me decide on this online broker (Originally Posted: 06/10/2013)
Hi, I was thinking of investing some money in stocks and bonds (only a small amount though, since I am still in college and cannot afford to put all my money at risk). Deutsche Bank has an online broker quite famous in Germany, called MaxBlue. No deposit fee, transactions fee 0.25% of transaction size. What do you think? Has anyone made positive or negative experience with MaxBlue?
thank you!
That's really, really expensive.
oh ok. do you know a good online broker? I'm a student and I won't invest more than a fifth of my bank account, so it won't be a large sum. I don't intend to trade a lot, either. I want to pick a few and then hold them over a long period.
do you know a good online broker for people in my situation? btw I reside in the UK, but I'm from Germany, so either a German or a British broker would be good.
thank you!
For charting, I use ThinkOrSwim. For execution, I use OptionsHouse. I've done moderate research into the pros and cons of the various brokerages. A lot of them have great charting, but I like TOS. It has a lot of nice tools. Not that I use anything super sophisticated.
OptionsHouse has the cheapest trades I've found: $3.95 per equity trade. And they have various packages for options trades. The charting is ugly and not very efficient, which is why I have a free account with TOS which gets me real-time L2 quotes and charting, but execution is spot on. I haven't had an order fail to fill yet and the spread is the same as for any other brokerage I've looked into. Customer service is great. Their office is located right here in Chicago and I get a quick reply by somebody who actually has power to resolve my issue or knowledge to answer my question every time I've called.
This site was a good tool for me for screening brokerages: http://www.brokerage-review.com/
And I use this site to screen stocks: http://finviz.com/
If you don't like OptionsHouse for whatever reason, TradeKing is another good low-cost brokerage: https://www.tradeking.com/
